American German Dictionary — Introductory Notes
This dictionary provides a basic vocabulary of the American English language. It's especially aimed at visitors and travelers.
The dictionary is based on a generalized form of US American English. It doesn't take into account any aspects of Canadian English or any US regional features or specifics.
If a word can be pronounced in different ways, only the variant most common among native speakers is taken into account. Two or more variants are given if there is no clear majority for one or the other variant, or if the pronunciation depends on the meaning or the context of the word.
The notation of the pronunciation is based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). However, to reflect the characteristics of American English adequately, some of the IPA symbols are interpreted differently. A list of all symbols, including examples, can be found in the section Usage of Phonetic Symbols.
